AFTER A COUPLE OF YEARS exploring abstract painting born of intuition, I am returning to one of my favorite themes, people with expressive postures and gestures in intimate settings.
I have found inspiration in both online and in-person workshops that has led to a deeper investigation of color. What about values, saturation, tints and shades? The shapes in my figures are the vessels for unlimited exploration of color: Complements, single hue with black and white, colors next to each other on the color wheel, warm and cool color temperatures, beautiful neutrals. My new work has a quality of amiguity that gives just enough information to be evocative of the subject but holding a fair amount back to trigger the viewer’s imagination.
New challenges, risk, and vulnerability are not strangers to me. In my fifties I sailed single-handed forth and back across the Atlantic Ocean in a 30’ boat. It was that experience that gave me the courage to paint and put my work “out there”.
